Farmers have been using green manures for centuries in order to keep their land in good condition. But when artificial fertilisers appeared and were widely marketed, many growers, and gardeners, transferred their allegiance to these easy to use products. However, as organic gardening began to gain popularity in the second half of the 20th century, green manures began once again to find their place, not just in agriculture, but horticulture.
Green manures are a range of plants grown to benefit the soil in many ways, which can work wonders in gardens lacking organic matter, depleted of nutrients, and with poor soil condition. There are many varieties suiting most soils and conditions. They are truly plants that go on giving in so many ways.
Maggi will talk about the range available, their benefits, how and when to use them, and why we should have them as part of our regular gardening regime.
